The Small Size of Women Led Businesses

In my last blog post I shared some of the key findings off my ongoing research on the general topic of women and entrepreneurship as part of my Doctoral Studies. If you have not read that post do take a look here.

One of the findings of almost all researchers in the field of gender and entrepreneurship has been that women are establishing businesses in ever increasing numbers, their businesses remain in general much smaller than businesses male owned businesses. Why is that?

Well here are some of the reasons I have found in my review of more than 200 articles on the topic.

  1. Women often enter entrepreneurship as a result of push factors. This simply means that women often had no entrepreneurial intentions, but instead have been pushed into entrepreneurship for a number of reasons including, unemployment and the desire for an improved work-life balance.
  2. The small size of women’s business are often as a result of under-capitalization. Women begin their businesses with significantly less capital than men. Previous studies on why this occurs offer a diverse set of reasons. Some researchers have found that women are more risk averse than men and so borrow less and seek out less investment capital. Women perceive to a greater percentage than men that they are less likely to receive funding and so apply less often than men. It has also been found that women are often discriminated against by venture capitalists and lenders who are most often male.
  3.  Women’s businesses often remain small because women face societal demands that men do not. The demands of family and caretaking often limit the ability of women to grow their businesses as aggressively as men. In fact one study found that women who did engage in high growth entrepreneurship tended to be married/had now children. I know that I often have Mommy guilt and I have compromised growing as aggressively as I can because I felt that my children needed to be a priority – so this is a finding I have lived as a single parent.

I know, these findings are depressing if you are a female entrepreneur. The good news is that through my research I have also been able to determine strategies that female entrepreneurs can use to be successful in their ventures. In fact I am so passionate about it I created an entire webinar that outlines practical steps women can use to grow their businesses and combat these obstacles they face.

Introducing New Services for 2017 – Websites for Small Businesses

Oh my goodness everyone – I know I am late but Happy New Year! Like you I have been reflecting and re-engineering for future growth. This year I have chosen three main goals that I intend to focus on. The big three as I call hem help me to focus very specifically without distraction. Focus is necessary for goal achievement. With that said I will be focusing on bigger events and services for my coaching clients and I intend to roll out a suite of services and events that will help my coaching clients – who are predominantly women grow in all spheres of their lives. My hashtag for this year is #levelupyourlife. I am leveling up and so should you.

My first service is for all of you who are serious about launching your business and need a website. I am introducing website creation services for all small business clients.

Multiple Income Streams – Talent Selection

Hello, Hello ,

It is Week 2 of the multiple income streams challenge.

I do hope that you are rearing and ready to go and that you have filled in your Talent Worksheet. If  you have not read the the blog post and downloaded your worksheet do so right here.  Now that you have listed the five talents or skills that you possess, it is now time to brainstorm how you can leverage those talents to make money.

This week you are to select one of the skills or talents that you have listed on your worksheet. I often suggest choosing the talent or skill that you identified in the passion or formal training section (as you are more likely to feel more enthusiastic about creating income from that skill).

Next you are to write that skill or talent on the top of a sheet of paper. Every day you should brainstorm and write at least one product you can create or service you can deliver using the talent or skill that you identified. This will provide you with the options you have in creating multiple income streams of income.

Example

Let us say that I have identified creative writing as the talent I am passionate about. Then I will begin to brainstorm. What can I create or provide at a fee? Your first responses will be easy to come by as they may be obvious but as the days pass by then you will have to think harder. Do not get daunted or frustrated as these latter ones may be more innovative ideas since you had to delve deeper. Some responses could include:

  • a children’s story book
  • greeting cards
  • a creative writing class
  • storytelling morning for children
  • etc

Business Model Webinar and Seminar

I have been conducting seminars recently for institutions on using the business model canvas to create a strategy for one’s business. I have noted also that there are many persons with an entrepreneurial dream who just do not know where to begin when creating a business. Similarly there are entrepreneurs who may be struggling with their initial business strategy but have no idea how to change their strategy or pivot. Change

Well I did my first Facebook LiveStream this week. My Internet connection was weak and video quality not the best but the message was strong. I spoke about change. Change is a prerequisite for growth- without change you can expect the same results without fail – every time. It is human nature to resist change but if you truly understand that to disrupt your life and move to the next level things will have to be different, you will embrace change. View below.

Life Coaching + Academic Coaching

Oh my it has been a while I am so sorry but I have been up to quite a number of things including the training and orientation of educators around the Caribbean region in the new Animation and Game Design syllabus that I was privileged to serve as Convener for the syllabus panel – more on that in another post.

Recently I have been booking quite a number of adult clients who desire academic coaching as they need help making decisions about furthering their education. What I have found is that adults require much more that the normal academic coaching as their lives are complicated and they have less time and room for missteps. I have been combining life coaching with my academic coaching service to provide a holistic experience for my clients. Their life choices, their aspirations, and experiences, their hidden dreams and moonshots and their fears and scares are all uncovered and discussed as a means to assist them in making the correct decision for them academically.

The combination of both aspects of the coaching ensure that my clients do not make academic choices in a vacuum but instead choose options that will provide them with sustainable professional and personal growth that align with their values and genius points.
